Baked Apples

Baked Apples are a really nice fall dessert, they’re easy to make, and require minimal ingredients. I made these recently on a weeknight. Other times I’ve made them when I wanted to make something for dessert, but didn’t plan ahead or buy ingredients at the store.

Image20000130The Baked Apples are simple. All you need are some apples that are cut in half and cored with a streusel topping made of oats, brown sugar mixed with melted butter, and some spices. The first two times I made this dessert I didn’t have any oats on hand so I used some of my kids’ instant oatmeal packets. I mixed them with brown sugar, melted butter and some spices. The dessert was delicious.

So I played around with the topping using actual oats, not instant oatmeal packets. I experimented with the ingredients and got it just right. The apples are baked, so they’re nice and soft. The streusel topping is warm and gooey with just a little bit of crunchiness. A nice bonus of baking this dessert is that your home will smell very nice. You won’t need to burn ‘apple pie’ candles because this is the real deal.

I started with four Red Delicious apples, just because that’s what looked good at the store. We eat a lot of Red Delicious, Gala, and Fuji apples, but you can use whatever kind of apples you like to eat. I cut each apple in half then used a paring knife
to remove the cores.

I started making the streusel by melting 3/4 of a stick of butter in a saucepan over a low-medium heat; once it was melted I stirred in half a cup of brown sugar. Once the brown sugar was dissolved I turned off the heat then stirred in some cinnamon, with a pinch of ginger and salt. Finally I stirred in half a cup of oats and my streusel was ready.

I spread even amounts of the streusel onto the apples, filling in the hole from the core and covering the cut half of the apple. Next I put the apples on a baking sheet then put it in the oven. After thirty minutes the apples were nice and soft and the streusel topping was crunchy on top, but still gooey on the inside. Then as an added bonus my house smelled like apple cinnamon.

This is the chef’s knife set that I use and what I recommend. As far as Chef’s knifes go they can get kind of expensive, but this one is not. This knife set comes with a chef’s knife, a vegetable paring knife that I used to core these apples, and a pair of scissors. I use the scissors for making my S’mores Cup dessert and for trimming skin off chicken. The scissors are really sharp!
